8/14/2023 0 Comments Ubd unpacking standards template![]() I wanted to video this on a one-on-one level so that all details of the discussion on this topic were heard. One particular teacher agreed with me that some of our standards are too broad and that she found "we were trying to align work with standards that didn't fit right." I thought that it would be a good decision then to have her at first go through the unpacking process to see how you can authentically make meaning of anchor standards and have a better alignment of standard to assessment. In the initial questioning of the standards, I wanted to examine the weaknesses of our standards moreover, I wanted my fellow English teachers to see some of flaws in our standards. This type of idea is developed to promote learning of the abstract and conceptual. An overarching idea is a broad statement, but it should also address the idea of endured learning. This is something to think about when developing the overarching idea of a standard. The most important concept is that we are looking at unpacked standards, but also looking at how a standard transfers to a "big idea" that has value beyond the classroom. Within the unpacking process, it is important to realize that we are not simply looking at the standards and saying, "yes, this all makes sense," and then go on making assessments. I utilized throughout the video the state of Maryland's unpacked standards to develop an effective way to utilize unpacked standards and make meaning of those unpacked standards by using a template that I created. In my video I describe the reasons for not just unpacking a standard, but unpacking it with a purpose towards developing enduring learning and essential questions. We were simply reading the standards without a direction or reason. I mention in my video below how we started this process at our school earlier in the year, but our guidelines on how, why and where we are going with the unpacking process was unclear. Earlier this year, we attempted to unpack standards based upon close reading. The success of re-examining the gaps in our ELA standards allowed for my English department to move onto the next stage in assessment development based on curriculum: unpacking the standards.
